New Mexicans Love Beauty and Embellishments

Lots of flowers in New Mexico from wild to cultivated and it is obvious that flowers mean a lot here since everywhere you look they adorn houses, ladies hair and grow wild. The garden centers and grocery stores sell lots of plants and arrangements.

While traveling through New Mexico it is apparent how much the native New Mexicans love beauty.
From a salmon colored house on the main street in Truth or Consequence that is just surrounded by beautiful roses of every color to the public buildings with colorful paintings adorning their outer walls- beauty abounds.
Many popular buildings that normally have standard, conforming architecture and specific designs to follow such as a McDonalds still have a beautiful wide border of cobalt tile surrounding the outside.
I have been enchanted by their bright colors everywhere such as the bridges with salmon or turquoise abutments.
Their detail to enhancing and embellishing everything to beautify it is evident even in the women here. Many sport a flower in their hair, a reminder of the traditional picture we hold in our mind of a Mexican Senorita.
I see this same love of beauty on many of the roadsides to mark a scene of a fatal accident were a loved one lost their lives. In many states, this custom exists to mark the place but usually consists of a crude cross and some flowers. Here it is taken to a higher level often with several crosses of greater beauty. Each cross is more elaborate than the previous one. Flowers also grace these memorials, but here they seem to be more formal arrangements and a larger display. Even religious statuary is seen at these spots of remembrance.
This is of course a highly religious area and evidence of the Catholic influence is everywhere from the mission style churches to the grottos high up on the mountainsides.
I’ve taken notice that their ranches and farms usually contain some decorative element along with an extreme example of orderliness and cleanliness.
In spite of all this, the real beauty is in the people. They exude friendliness and a sense of caring. We have become enamored with the area and the loveliness of the people is the number one reason why.
